TWNIC denies giving online trading data to tax authorities

Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC) yesterday issued an statement saying that it would offer the “.com.tw” addresses of its client companies, but not their online trading or auction records, to the Taipei National Tax Administration.
TWNIC’s move came as a response to media reports that TWNIC has agreed to offer to tax authorities the online trading data of firms as long as the transaction value reaches a certain amount.
At the moment, TWNIC is a neutral and non-profit organization that takes charge of domain name registration and IP (Internet Protocol) address allocation in Taiwan. Besides offering full-range network services, TWNIC participates in various international conferences, to provide services for network service providers in Taiwan through public participation.
A spokesman with TWNIC said that the domain name registration data excludes the online transaction records of those firms that set up their own Web sites.
Just four days ago, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) claimed that it has the right to demand Internet service providers (ISPs) to provide data concerning client companies with “.com.tw” addresses for the purpose of collecting tax, a senior ministry official said yesterday.
