Ugly Websites - Function over Form

Many people spend a lot of time making websites look nice and pretty, with nice graphics, Flash intros and the like.
Does it really matter!
The most sucessful websites eBay, Google, Yahoo, Friends Reunited etc are not really ‘artwork’ or very pleasing to the eye, or are they? They do say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
