Sky - Google alliance

Published December 6th, 2006

Sky has published a press release announcing an alliance between itself and Google. This alliance looks set to cover several key areas, video, communications (email and VoIP for example), searching and advertising.

The video component sounds not unlike an extension of the existing YouTube.com website, with Sky customers being able to upload video content and share it with others. If the multi-platform support was to extend to Sky set-top boxes and other currently non-broadband connected devices then it would allow many more people to engage in a media rich future. The email aspect looks to be a leverage of the Google mail platform to offer people a Sky.com email address to Sky broadband customers.

The news that there is to be an advertising revenue sharing scheme between Google and Sky will possibly be an important revenue stream for Sky. since it will generate extra income to cross subsidise broadband customers on its free or low cost broadband services
