NTT DoCoMo shuts down PHS operations

(TP) Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo is shutting down its PHS operations from 7 January, the Nikkei reports. DoCoMo launched the personal handyphone system in 1995 but the company now plans to focus on boosting its other mobile phone services. With NTT DoCoMo exiting the PHS market, operator Willcom is the only PHS service provider in Japan. Furthermore, the firm was granted a licence for the 2.5GHz band and Willcom plans to start a new PHS service next year with higher speeds and enhanced functionality.
