EC welcomes Apple plan to cut iTunes fees in UK

(TP) The European Commission (EC) has issued a statement welcoming an announcement by Apple that it plans to harmonise song download prices on its iTunes site across Europe within the next six months. The move will stop UK consumers paying almost 10 percent more for downloads than their counterparts across mainland Europe. The EC launched an anti-trust investigation into the pricing following a formal complaint from UK consumer protection group Which?. The EC has also concluded that it is not agreements between Apple and the major record companies which determine how the iTunes store is organised in Europe. As a result, it plans no further action in this case. Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said the EC welcomed moves for consumers to benefit from a single market for music downloads.
