This Day in History for iPad is an interactive multimedia calendar that displays historical events for the current day or any selected day, along with related media such as photos, illustrations, music, and speeches. Users will hear the national anthems of countries on the day they became a nation, listen to presidents’ speeches on the anniversaries of their inaugurations, and play sound clips from famous artists on their birthdays. Gladinet Launches Cloud Desktop 2.0

Pubished April 2nd, 2010

Cloud Desktop is the world’s first ubiquitous cloud storage client, using Windows Explorer to access the cloud directly from a PC desktop and move or store files to multiple cloud storage services at once with a user-friendly drag-and-drop interface. So it seems only fitting that Cloud Desktop 2.0 strengthens its industry-leading position by addressing the security concerns users cite as the deal-breaker when considering migrating to cloud storage.

“One of the major concerns of cloud storage users is security,” explained Gladinet SVP Business Development Franklyn Peart. “How can users be sure hackers, service provider employees or anyone else can’t look at their files when they’re online? Until now, that was a nagging question with no good answer.”

With the introduction of AES 128-bit encryption for files stored in the cloud, Gladinet Cloud Desktop 2.0 is tackling that concern head-on: The system simply encrypts users’ files on the storage client before saving them on the servers in their encrypted form.

Gladinet didn’t stop at enhancing security with its first major version update, however. Cloud Desktop 2.0 includes a variety of new features designed to provide better usability, performance, stability and scalability. The new Gladinet Management Console completely reworks and consolidates all the management interfaces for the Cloud Desktop virtual directory manager, task manager, settings manager, backup manager and audit tracing, and the new Cache Manager offers smart caching and granular cache controls.

Cloud Desktop 2.0 is considerably more robust than the system’s earlier iterations, transferring terabytes of data with dozens of upload and download threads, maintaining transfer rates of up to four megabytes per second. To do so, the system uses mirrored folders to pre-cache files and utilizes Smart Bandwidth Control to allocate more bandwidth to the browser when it is in use; once the browser is idle, Cloud Desktop resumes normal transfer speeds.

Although Gladinet Cloud Desktop has always been fully integrated with the major cloud storage providers — including Google Docs, Google Picasa, Google Docs for Google Apps, Windows Azure Blob Storage, EMC Atmos Storage, Amazon S3, Nirvanix, Box.net and AT&T Synaptic Storage — with Cloud Desktop 2.0, Gladinet has provided enhancements for Google Picasa, Docs and Apps. The system now supports any file type in Google Storage, while the new Cloud Explorer allows the user to set access controls and share files with Amazon S3 and Azure Blob Storage.

“We are excited to introduce Gladinet Cloud Desktop 2.0 as the industry-leading, ubiquitous cloud storage access solution,” stated Peart. “Gladinet developers will continue to operate at the forefront of the cloud industry and set the standard in cloud storage clients.”

About Gladinet
Founded in 2008, Gladinet launched its cloud services in spring 2009 with the release of its flagship product, Gladinet Cloud Desktop, which leverages the power of the Internet as a virtual PC, providing users the convenience of a virtual disk drive. An enabler of Web 3.0 technology, Gladinet is changing the way small and medium-sized businesses access and use cloud storage through its widely accepted, open-platform cloud storage services. IBM Receives National Public Service Award

Pubished March 29th, 2010

IBM announced that it has received the 2010 National Public Service Award from the American Bar Association (ABA) in recognition of the company’s dedication to providing free legal assistance to nonprofit organizations.

The ABA Section of Business Law bestows its annual Public Service Award to a law firm that has demonstrated a commitment to delivering pro bono business services to organizations. IBM is only the second corporate law department to receive the ABA honor.

“IBMers have long demonstrated an unwavering commitment to providing volunteer assistance to non profit community service organizations,” said Robert C. Weber, senior vice president, Legal and Regulatory Affairs and General Counsel for IBM. “In these uncertain times, it is critical that companies and law firms remain focused on providing the essential pro bono legal assistance that nonprofits need so they can continue to fulfill their mission of service to their communities.”

Over the past few years, IBM has expanded its pro bono legal activities and made providing free legal assistance to nonprofit organizations a cornerstone of its legal department’s efforts worldwide. To support this endeavor, the company established a global pro bono committee that encourages its attorneys to become more active by making it easier for them to find opportunities for volunteerism that meet their personal interests.

Through its collaboration with organizations like the Pro Bono Partnership, IBM attorneys are connected with nonprofit clients who need assistance with legal matters that regularly arise, as well as unexpected crises. The Partnership works with nonprofits based in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. IBM has supported the Partnership since 1998, and Michelle Browdy, vice president and assistant general counsel for IBM, is on the Partnership’s Board of Directors.

IBM attorneys have addressed more than 140 legal matters for Partnership clients, such as the Pediatric Cancer Foundation. In all, IBM lawyers have volunteered thousands of hours of legal assistance to essential community-based organizations that serve the poor and disadvantaged and typically are unable to afford to hire attorneys for broad legal representation.

“Under the leadership of Bob Weber and Michelle Browdy, pro bono activity at IBM has become a high priority and is now flourishing. We value our relationship with IBM and the enormous impact the legal department has had on our nonprofit clients and the communities they serve,” said Rick Hobish, executive director of the Pro Bono Partnership

During pro bono engagements, IBM lawyers help organizations establish and utilize best practices with their employees, clients and Boards and provide the guidance and legal expertise needed to comply with applicable governmental regulations. The insight from IBM’s attorneys also enables nonprofits to remain abreast of important legal developments that affect their day-to-day operations.

The pro bono work of IBM’s legal team complements the company’s global volunteerism initiative. During the last decade, IBM has been one of the largest corporate contributors of cash, equipment, and people to nonprofit organizations and educational institutions around the world and works hand-in-hand with public and nonprofit organizations to design technology solutions that address specific problems. This type of volunteer effort goes beyond business as usual, requiring IBM and grantee organizations to make significant commitments to work together, set clear benchmarks, and focus on measurable, achievable goals.

IBM’s employee volunteer effort is encouraged and supported worldwide through its On Demand Community, a program that helps volunteers provide Web-based solutions and assistance to their communities. Today, On Demand Community includes 134,551 employees with 6,848,599 volunteer hours logged, and 13,382 retirees with 3,056,403 volunteer hours logged.

On Demand Community offers access to both IBM technology and talent to schools, not-for-profit organizations, economic development groups, and focuses on communities threatened by the digital divide – the gap between those who have IT products and skills and those who don’t.

Corporate social responsibility and community engagement is woven into IBM’s culture and history. IBM is focused delivering innovation that matters for its clients and the world, including finding solutions that make the planet more efficient, such as solving social problems in the same manner that the company addresses business challenges. IBM’s approach is very broad and incorporates sharing the vast skills and technological talents of its people and contributing it into the communities we live and work in.

Microsoft Choice screen boosts Opera browser

Pubished March 22nd, 2010

Browser Opera says that downloads of its software have doubled since Microsoft introduced browser choice to Windows users on 1 March.

Microsoft now offers customers a choice of 12 browsers rather than installing its own Internet Explorer browser as a default. A screen offering users the chance to switch browser is rolling out across Europe as part of a Windows update.

Opera says that in Poland 77% of downloads have come from the screen. The number of copies downloaded in Poland were up by 328% on normal levels in the three days Opera analysed, between 12 and 14 March.

The screen has also made a big impact on Opera downloads in Spain, Italy and Denmark where downloads have doubled and over 60% of traffic is coming from the screen.

“This confirms that when users are given a real choice on how they choose the browser, they will try out alternatives,” said Hakon Wium Lie of Opera Software.

While the Norway-based company has focused on the European market, according to StatCounter GlobalStats in March 2010 Opera was the biggest browser in Russia with a market share of 32.76%, beating Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari.

Microsoft agreed to offer users browser choice in Europe as part of a settlement following a 10 year dispute with the European Commission over competition regulation.

“SADA Systems is committed to helping leverage the full potential of cloud computing for end users, so as a Google Enterprise Partner we have developed this app to enhance the end user administration experience and add to our Cloud ToolKit offerings” says Tony Safoian, company CEO. “Every one of our large clients has asked for this functionality – now by adding User Renamer for Google Apps to the Google Apps Marketplace, we’ve made it easy for Google Apps Education and Premier Edition customers to enhance the current functionality without any code or API work”

User Renamer for Google Apps is easy to install, comes with built in scalability, performance, and the reliability and security of Google’s infrastructure. The app is fully functional with single sign-on (SSO) and is centrally administered from the Google Apps control panel. During the renaming process, the old username is retained as a nickname, allowing all correspondences sent to the old name to be received by the new username. Furthermore username, login and email addresses are automatically synced with the changes made through User Renamer for Google Apps. The seamless integration of this app into Google’s universal navigation links further enhances the ability of users and admins to better handle the unpredictable situations that require a username switch including accidental typos in email setup, marriage and changes in company policy regarding uniformity of email addresses.

“We are very excited to have User Renamer in the Google Apps Marketplace” says Scott McMullan, Google Apps Partner Lead for Google Enterprise. “Through the Google Apps Marketplace, ISVs like SADA Systems are helping us build a rich ecosystem of integrated apps that work seamlessly with Google Apps, allowing IT administrators to leverage the benefits of cloud computing and extend Google Apps to meet more of their business needs. We are happy to offer User Renamer to the millions of Google Apps users who have embraced the cloud”

The Google Apps Marketplace makes it easy for more than 2 million Google Apps customers to discover, purchase and deploy integrated business Apps and related professional services. By integrating with user account and App data stored in Google Apps, these cloud Apps provide a simpler user experience, increase business efficiency, and reduce administrative overhead. Metalogix Announces New Solution to Migrate Blogs to SharePoint 2010

Pubished March 7th, 2010

Metalogix Software, a leading provider of solutions for Microsoft SharePoint migration, management, and archiving as well as ExchangeÂŽ migration and archiving, today announced Metalogix Migration Manager for Blogs.
The Metalogix Migration Manager for Blogs is another component of Metalogix’s comprehensive strategy for migrating more Enterprise Content Management (ECM) systems than any other vendor into SharePoint 2007 or 2010 both on premises and when part of the Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS). Metalogix also simplifies migrating content from Oracle Content Server, EMC Documentum eRoom, and Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) 2002 to SharePoint.
“Some of the biggest areas of interest for SharePoint 2010 are the blogs and social features,” said Chris O’Brien, SharePoint MVP. “In the past, the challenges around migrating content from external blog platforms have been a significant deterrent to adopting SharePoint. With Metalogix Migration Manager for Blogs the community will be in a great position to take advantage of the blogging capabilities of SharePoint 2010. The ability to preserve comments and categories is huge!”
Metalogix Migration Manager for Blogs allows users to move blogs from Google Blogger, WordPress, Telligent and many other popular blogging systems into SharePoint 2010. The tool preserves content, comments and categories and features a tree-based user interface with copy-and-paste functions similar to the familiar Windows File Explorer.
“Metalogix Migration Manager for Blogs allows users to adopt SharePoint’s social publishing features with just a few clicks. We expect that by giving this solution to the MVP community we can help the thought leaders in the SharePoint space take advantage of what SharePoint 2010 has to offer,” said Chris Risley, CEO, Metalogix. “The ability to standardize on SharePoint as a blogging platform has real value to organizations that want to foster improved user interaction and productivity. Integrated search along with enterprise metadata means users can not only create content easily but find it and collaborate on it as well.”
The Metalogix solution migrates content from any blogging solution that supports the Metaweblog API, RSS or ATOM. Blog posts, comments, and categories are preserved and users can be mapped. When migrating a blog from SharePoint 2007, it preserves version histories and user permissions as well. SharePoint administrators can perform migration activities remotely from any client machine and batch migration operations to run at any time. Migration is performed through the supported SharePoint and Blog APIs to assure compliance and data integrity.
Metalogix is offering the Migration Manager for Blogs free to all Microsoft MVPs. The solution will be demonstrated at 12:00 p.m. pacific time, today, during the 2010 Microsoft MVP Global Summit at Microsoft’s corporate headquarters in Redmond, Washington. It will show Microsoft MVPs the migration of an MVP’s blog from Blogger.com and the Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog to a SharePoint 2010 Server. Metalogix will also be sponsoring an “experimental server” to which each MVP can migrate his/her blog to test and refine it on the SharePoint 2010 platform. The Microsoft 2010 MVP Global Summit is hosting 1,300 of the world’s top leaders from the technical community for the four-day conference. The MVPs represent 96 countries, speak 37 different languages and span 94 Microsoft technology areas.
Metalogix is the innovation leader in SharePoint migration solutions, which empower organizations to securely and automatically migrate more ECM systems than any other vendor into SharePoint 2007 and 2010, both on premises and when part of BPOS. More than 2500 customers have migrated to SharePoint using Metalogix products.
